The world is complex. To navigate it well, we need to see how it is organized. The business and economic world organizes itself into five levels of complexity, each with its own dynamics, its own emergent phenomena, its own formula for success: the individual making a decision, the individual augmented by AI tools, the manager of a product portfolio, the leader of a company, the steward of an economy.
Seeing the structure is the start. Acting in it requires a model — something the strategist can reason with at every level. The Five Business Big Pictures is a strategy framework and a model of human agency that operates across all five levels. It identifies the level at which a strategist is acting, makes the dynamics at each level legible, and uses the same reference system at every level. One framework, five levels, one foundation.
The picture shows how. The world resolves into transactions. Transactions organize themselves into five levels of complexity. A single map and a single board make every level legible. The board is a simplified working model, useful both for developing strategic thinking and for strategizing directly. Six strategizing actions are how the strategist acts on what they see. The actions then become new transactions in the world, closing the loop.
