The Five Business Big Pictures, in One Picture

The Five Business Big Pictures, in One Picture
The world is complex. To navigate it well, we need to see how it is organized. The business and economic world organizes itself into five levels of complexity, each with its own dynamics, its own emergent phenomena, its own formula for success: the individual making a decision, the individual augmented by AI tools, the manager of a product portfolio, the leader of a company, the steward of an economy.

Seeing the structure is the start. Acting in it requires a model — something the strategist can reason with at every level. The Five Business Big Pictures is a strategy framework and a model of human agency that operates across all five levels. It identifies the level at which a strategist is acting, makes the dynamics at each level legible, and uses the same reference system at every level. One framework, five levels, one foundation.

The picture shows how. The world resolves into transactions. Transactions organize themselves into five levels of complexity. A single map and a single board make every level legible. The board is a simplified working model, useful both for developing strategic thinking and for strategizing directly. Six strategizing actions are how the strategist acts on what they see. The actions then become new transactions in the world, closing the loop.

From Cycle to Flywheel

The Strategy Learning Guides are facilitator documents for running structured strategy sessions around OFMOS® Essential, designed for educators, coaches, and L&D leaders. Each guide pairs the game with a structured reflection that connects what happened on the board to the framework, turning a session into a deliberate learning experience.

Three free pilot guides are available now — for the Individual Level, the Human-AI Level, and the Product Level. Each is a 60-minute facilitator-led session. These are the first; more to come.
The Individual Level guide. The Individual Level is the level at which the strategist's instrument is their own cognition. The unit of analysis is the decision-action transaction: a single sequence of intent, action, interaction, and return. What the strategist manages, though, is not single instances. It is recurring decisions, the standing moves they commit to and refine over time. Each piece on the board is one such decision: a single thing the strategist can launch, retire, or innovate. Over time, it expresses itself as many decision-action transactions.

The guide is for coaches, self-learners, educators, and anyone working on the quality of their own decisions. The structural requirement at this level is coherence: the unified mental model the strategist brings to every higher level, the foundation strategic thinking rests on.

The Game — Anchor and Gateway

OFMOS® Essential is the physical anchor of the system and the gateway into it. Anchor: the board is the Ofmos Map made physical, the pieces are the level's emergent objects, and the six strategizing actions are the moves on every turn. Gateway: this is where most people will meet the framework for the first time — opening the box, setting up the board, playing.

The Kickstarter campaign is now past its funding goal, and continuing through May 31. If you have already backed it, thank you. If the system is something you want in your hands and in the hands of the people you teach, coach, or build with, this is a good moment.
